History

2001: Barry Johnston started to investigate options to site a wind turbine on Flotta. Irvine, Shona and Robin Flett the original landowners of the site who have a long association with Flotta agree to lease the land for the purposes of a wind farm.

2002: Public presentation to Flotta residents.

2003: Planning application submitted for a single 2MW wind turbine.

2003: Secured ownership of a second-hand prototype NEG Micon 2MW turbine from Burgar Hill.

2004: Scottish and Southern Energy announced 18 month delay with connection to electricity grid.  Unfeasible to install the second-hand turbine on the Flotta site due to deterioration of equipment during this period.

2004: Planning permission granted by Orkney Islands Council for single 2MW wind turbine.

2005/2007: Unsuccessful efforts made to secure new 2MW wind turbine from a range of wind turbine manufacturers due to high World demand at that time.

2007: Section 75 agreement signed and formal planning permission issued.

2009: Proposed revision to access track route.

2009: German manufacturer Enercon agree to supply 2.3MW wind turbine.

2009: Onsite Geotechnical study undertaken.

March 2010: Access track, foundations and grid connection completed.

April 2010: Turbine delivered and installed.

June 2010: Site fully operational.
